We are thrilled to present this exceptional 1979 Pontiac Trans Am, a documented Factory Y84 Special Edition model. In 1979, Pontiac produced only 1,107 Special Edition Trans Ams equipped with a factory 4-speed manual transmission and a Pontiac 400 engine. This vehicle is one of those rare examples. The included PHS Report confirms that this Trans Am features the original factory 4-speed manual transmission and Pontiac 400 engine, with visible VIN and “PWH” stamps on the block. Finished in Factory Black with a Black deluxe interior and gold SE pinstripes, this car underwent a meticulous repaint and restoration completed in 2017. It boasts a fully restored Black deluxe vinyl interior and comes with PHS documentation verifying its special status.
This Trans Am is presented in the highly coveted color combination of Starlight Black exterior over Black deluxe vinyl interior, as verified by the PHS documents and trim tag. These low-production, 4-speed Trans Ams are among the most sought-after collectibles, with their value and desirability continuing to rise. The vehicle was disassembled and extensively restored between 2015 and 2017. It has been driven on several Bandit Runs and other road trips, demonstrating that it is both a showpiece and a roadworthy vehicle. It is not a concours trailer queen but remains in excellent condition.
Exterior
The exterior of this Trans Am, restored approximately seven years ago, remains in impressive condition. The professional repaint, which involved complete disassembly of the car, including the engine and transmission, is documented with restoration photos included in the gallery. The vehicle sports a factory Starlight Black finish with new decals and special edition pinstripes. The paint has a high gloss and excellent shine, with no visible rust on the body or underside. Both bumpers are in good condition, and there is no bubbling or cracking of paint due to body filler.
Some minor imperfections are present, including small paint pimples that appeared about two years post-restoration due to improper preparation in certain areas. These are less noticeable from a distance but visible up close. New bumper grills and nose emblem have been added. The tires, sized 225/70/15, are less than two years old, and the 8” WS6 snowflake wheels have been restored with new center caps and lug nuts. All weather stripping and window sweeps are new, and the trunk area is clean, featuring the original spare tire and jack, along with a correct trunk mat.
Interior
The Black deluxe vinyl interior has been restored to a high standard. The seat covers and foam have been replaced, showing no wear, rips, or seam splits. The carpet is new and free from stains, rips, or holes. The original dashboard, restored without cracks, warping, or fading, is complemented by a restored dash bezel by Randy Combs. The stock AM/FM stereo is operational, and thankfully, the dashboard remains unmodified for modern audio equipment. The door panels have been replaced with new ones, and both door pulls are solid. The headliner and rear package tray have been replaced, with the latter now housing new JBL speakers.
All interior and exterior lights and gauges function correctly, with the exception of the cigarette lighter and clock. Dash lights have been upgraded to LED. The stereo, wipers, and blower motor are in working order. The car has not been smoked in, ensuring a fresh interior. However, the horn is currently non-functional, and while the factory AC system remains intact, the AC belt was removed due to noise from the compressor, which may need rebuilding or replacement.
Mechanical
Mechanically, this Trans Am is in excellent condition and has been reliably driven on various road trips. The original Pontiac W72 400 engine, matching numbers and visible VIN block stamp, remains in the car. The engine was rebuilt years ago and refreshed during the 2017 restoration, including a new distributor and rebuilt carburetor. New spark plug wires and an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold have been added.
The suspension was restored with new leaf springs, body mounts, and shocks. The braking system was fully overhauled with a new master cylinder, calipers, hoses, and pads. An aluminum radiator with new hoses and a new gas tank with fuel pump were also installed. The exhaust system was upgraded with a performance muffler, providing a pleasing rumble at idle and cruising speeds. A new starter was installed.
The car performs exceptionally well, starts promptly without smoke, idles smoothly, and handles with confidence. The brakes, recently serviced, stop effectively without pulling. The engine is clean and well-detailed, as shown in the photos.
In summary, this 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Y84 Special Edition is a remarkable blend of originality and restoration. Its unique features and condition make it a prized collectible that is ready to deliver both show-stopping looks and thrilling driving experiences.
